Long Beach Island is a New Jersey barrier island that consists of several communities, some known as boroughs and others falling under the jurisdiction of Long Beach Township. The island is 18 miles long and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Barnegat Bay, and Little Egg Harbor Bay. At _ mile wide from bay to ocean, residents and vacationers alike can enjoy any type of sea.
Long Beach Island, originally named “Long Beach” by Captain Cornelius Jacobson in 1614, consists of white sugar sand beaches edged by protective dunes.

 

Its year round residential volume falls around 20,000. In 1944, a storm destroyed the only boardwalk on the island. Today, Long Beach Island has one amusement part, plenty of dining, and is most popular for its uncommon peacefulness that sets it apart from normal resort destinations. The island offers relaxed fun for many from May through November. Short terms rentals are abundant on the island.

 


HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS:

One of Long Beach Islands most recognized attractions is “Old Barney”, its historical Barnegat Lighthouse. Constructed in 1835 to mark the inlet, Old Barney has served as a navigational landmark for most of the eastern seaboard through today. Situated at the northern most part of the island, the Barnegat Lighthouse features a wild life part, fishing, shopping, dining, and lots of seafood! Visit Viking village on the bay side for daily shopping and craft shows or to watch the commercial fishing ships come to port.

Long Beach Island is home to a bustling economy of child development. The Island has various foundations that support the growth and development of children. Town yacht clubs offer swimming and sailing lessons. The surf light theatre offers children’s plays performed by adults, and Fantasy Island offers rides, games and contests.

Long Beach Island is also home to a bustling nightlife that includes bars, restaurants, clubs, and concerts. Many boroughs offer free concerts weekly at their parks.

The area is home to over 2 dozen bars, and many popular bands and budding talents grace the stages of the local bar scene weekly. For a change of pace, LBI is also approximately 40 minutes from Atlantic City, which offers casino gambling and boardwalk style gaming.
